At the New England College of Optometry's NECO Center for Eye Care CFC, we emphasize proper hygiene and care practices essential to mntn eye health when wearing contact lenses. Contact lenses offer a convenient alternative to traditional glasses while treating various ocular conditions.
Dr. Phyllis Andrejko, an atting optometrist at NECO CFC Roslindale and assistant professor of clinical optometry, is passionate about the benefits of contact lens wear for all her patients. “Contact lenses are versatile tools that improve vision without compromising appearance,” she explns. “They can be a primary or secondary option deping on individual needs.”
Types of Contact Lenses
Contact lenses come in diverse types suited to different needs:
Soft Contacts: The most common type, offered as dly disposable, biweekly, or monthly options based on patient preference and the goals associated with contact lens wear.
Spherical Lenses: Designed for basic prescriptions like myopia or hyperopia.
Toric Lenses: Tlored to correct astigmatism by mntning different levels of curvature in each lens half.
Multifocal Contacts: Ideal for individuals requiring vision correction at multiple distances, offering a seamless transition between near and far vision.
Rigid Gas Permeable RGP Lenses Specialty Lens Options
Specialty lenses like scleral contacts address specific eye conditions or unique visual needs that standard lenses might not manage effectively. These options include:
Scleral Contact Lenses: Custom-fitted to cover the entire cornea, providing relief for patients with severe dry eyes and irregular corneas.
Orthokeratology Ortho-K Lenses: Overnight wear contact lenses designed to gently reshape your cornea during sleep, enabling clear vision without dly lens usage.
Getting Started
Initiate your contact lens journey by scheduling an appointment at NECO CFC or a similar professional facility. A comprehensive eye examination and fitting will be conducted by the optometrist based on your individual needs and visual requirements.
Dr. Andrejko underscores that not all patients are suitable for contact lenses but many can benefit from discussing their options with an expert. She adds, For some patients, contacts provide better vision than glasses, while for others they might offer a secondary option for leisure or specific activities.
