Read: 2527

Google is pioneering a cutting-edge smart contact lens in collaboration with the pharmaceutical giant Novartis. This novel development revolutionize healthcare by leveraging Google's advanced technology expertise and Novartis' rich domn knowledge in the pharmaceutical sector.

As tech giants are increasingly integrating medicine, from remote consultations to monitoring health conditions like diabetes, Google recognizes lucrative opportunities within the vast digital healthcare market. The company has already ventured into areas such as its 3D mobile platform for enhancing healthcare data digitization through its pioneering eyewear initiative known as Google Glass.

In a recent partnership announcement between Google and Alcon, an eyewear division of Novartis, they plan to create smart contact lenses equipped with a tiny microchip and an almost undetectable hr-thin electronic circuit. The device will measure diabetic patients' blood sugar levels directly from the tear fluid on their eye surface, transmitting data to mobile devices for real-time monitoring and intervention.

Sergey Brin, Google's co-founder, envisions utilizing minituarization technology in electronics to enhance people's quality of life, while Novartis CEO Joe Jimenez sees this as a cornerstone for managing various diseases across the body through different wearable tech devices under development.

The commercial timeline remns undisclosed, but Jimenez has shared with Reuters and The Wall Street Journal that he anticipates bringing this innovative contact lens to market within five years, which could generate significant revenue streams.

By combining Google's technological prowess and Novartis' deep understanding of the pharmaceutical industry, the partnership address unmet medical needs.

Novartis is also exploring how this smart contact lens technology can be used to assess long-sighted people's vision and automatically adjust for focus, similar to how a camera lens focuses on an object when taking a picture. This development would allow users to potentially dispense with the need for glasses.

Googlex, Google's secretive innovation lab based in Mountn View, California, is leading this contact lens project alongside other initiatives that tackle global challenges across healthcare, transportation, energy, and IoT.
