Back in the early '90s, Scooby-Doo was a familiar sight on my television screen. He and his gang were solving mysteries, often involving fake ghosts haunting mansions or knights scaring away guests at art museu cover up forgeries.
But while I found myself captivated by their adventures, there was one aspect of the series that caught my real attention: my growing curiosity about the world beyond the fuzzy, distorted images on the screen. As time progressed and my vision became increasingly blurry, sitting a foot away from the TV no longer sufficed – it seemed like a distant dream.
My mother noticed this change in me too and took me to an eye doctor, which I found quite intriguing. To an enthusiastic six-year-old who loved to read yes, you could call me a bookworm, showing off my alphabet knowledge with the visual acuity test was just too exciting!
The first pr of eyeglasses
The trip to see the eye doctor felt like a pivotal moment in my life. I vividly the excitement of having a lollipop as a reward and then being fitted for those magical glasses that would soon help me see the world clearly agn.
Clear vision
Those four eyes instantly made all the difference, bringing clarity to everything from schoolwork to TV. The chalkboard was never more colorful than when it was in focus.
A rollercoaster ride with contact lenses
After my first experience of wearing eyeglasses, I tried contact lenses for a while, mnly because they offered the convenience of swapping sunglasses quickly. However, losing them during trips or simply dropping one led me to abandon this option, resulting in seven years without contacts.
Balancing glasses and contacts
This year saw a change with my travels to Cuba – needing to protect my eyes from hours spent under the sun prompted me back into contact lens use. Yet, I've mostly stuck with my trusty glasses since then. I wear contacts only for sunny excursions or special occasions; otherwise, they feel like an extra layer of comfort.
Glasses as a personal statement
As someone who doesn't consider myself a fashionista in the traditional sense, my eyeglasses represent something more than just vision correction to me. They're a part of my identity that allows me to express my personality without breaking the bank.
My designer glasses collection
I appreciate being able to enjoy designer eyewear even though my budget might not allow for much extravagance elsewhere. With contributions from insurance and personal savings, I've been fortunate enough to own prs from luxury brands like Versace, Coach, Elizabeth James co-founded by the Olsen twins, and more.
Feeling empowered with glasses
While there were moments in childhood when I might have been a target of jokes for my nerdy spectacles, growing up wasn't a journey where eyeglasses became a symbol of awkwardness. To me, they're empowering – a reminder that style isn't just about what's tring or expensive; it's about personal flr.
My glasses story
From Steve Urkel to myself, the world has evolved beyond the stereotypes attached to glasses wearers in television and movies. Today, eyeglasses are an accessory that enhances my personality rather than detracts from it.
