A few tips regarding wearing cosmetics and contact lens wear can greatly enhance patient comfort when they choose to adorn their eyes with makeup.

  1. Always Wash Hands Before Inserting Lenses: Instruct your patients about proper hand hygiene before handling their lenses. This simple step prevents the risk of contamination that could lead to infections.

  2. Apply Cosmetics Prior to Wearing Contact Lenses: Advise them to apply face moisturizers and any other cosmetic products after they have already put on their contact lenses. The oil content in some of these products can affect lens comfort and vision, so it's best to keep your hands free of such substances.

  3. Choose Hypoallergenic or Eye Care Professional ECP-Approved Makeup: While many major cosmetics brands are safe for use with contacts, remind patients about the importance of cleanliness when applying cosmetics around their eyes. Ensure they're aware that makeup should be hypoallergenic or approved by an ECP to avoid potential irritations.

  4. Eye Make-up Removal and Contact Lenses: Emphasize that it's crucial to remove contact lenses before using eye makeup removers, which may contn harsh chemicals that could irritate lenses or cause discomfort during wear.

  5. Cleaning Cases Regularly: Remind patients not to store their contact lens cases in cosmetic bags where they can accumulate bacteria from brushes and contners. Suggest having separate storage for these items.

  6. Proper Storage of Contact Lenses: Encourage patients to replace their contact lens cases every three months to mntn hygienic conditions and enhance lens life.

  7. Regular Case Replacement: Stress that cases used in conjunction with contact lenses should be regularly cleaned or replaced, as they can collect debris from makeup products over time.

To better inform your patients about these tips, consider creating a detled handout that outlines each step of proper contact lens care alongside the use of cosmetics. This document will not only provide them with the necessary knowledge to use their cosmetics safely but also help in mntning optimal vision and lens hygiene.

By educating patients on how to balance makeup application with contact lens wear, you can significantly enhance their overall experience and satisfaction with both products.
